Types of Software - System Software / How to define System Software: (Part-I)

Today, the range of present or available software, has become vast and varied, we classify most software into two steps:

      1. System Software
      2. Application Software

1. System Software:

System software is a sketch of one or more programs which control operation and extends the processing capability of a computer system in generally, in a computer system software performs one or more of the below mentioned functions with details:

  • Supports development of other application software.
  • Supports execution of other application software.
  • Monitor or to check capability its effectiveness usage of different hardware means such as CPU, Memory, peripherals etc.
  • Communication with and controls operation of peripheral devices such as printer, scanner, disk, tape, any added hardware etc.
Therefore, system software makes an operation of a computer system more effectiveness and efficient to make a flow & smooth work. It helps hardware components that work together and give support or flexibility for the developments and execution of application software/program. Programs with in a system software package, are called the system programs and those programs who prepared system software are referred to as system programmers accordingly.

Some commonly famous and known features of system software are as under with detail:

  1. Operating Systems: Operating system software takes care of effective and efficient utilization of all hardware and software components of a computer system.
  2. Programming language translators: Programming language translators transform the instructions prepared by programmers in a programming language into a form that can be interpreted and executed a computer system.
  3. Communications software: In a network environment where multiple computers are interconnected together by communications network communications software enables to transfer of data and program from one computer to another computer or a system accordingly.
  4. Utility program: Utility programs also known as a utilities, are as set of programs that helps users to utilize  program included to format of hard disks or flopy or a USB taking back up files stored on hard disks on to a tape or storing of the records stored in a file based on some key field etc.
